Vitiligo and Tinea Versicolor are the two diseases that cause skin discoloration. Certain portions of your skin might turn lighter while other parts may be dark resulting from a skin infection. Vitiligo is the result of any loss of skin pigmentation and shows in the form of pale or light spots on some areas of the skin. Uneven pigmentation may result from excessive exposure to the rays of the sun or non-removal of dead cells. There are various types of skin discoloration, and they must be handled separately. Each kind of skin discoloration needs different sort of treatment.

The Various Kinds of Skin Discoloration

Types Of Skin DiscolorationTo learn what type of skin discoloration you suffer from, you need to know the symptoms of skin discoloration. Skin discoloration implies any change in the natural color of the skin. Your skin may become whitish, yellowish, brownish, reddish, and orange or it may even become bluish. Normal skin constitutes cells known as melanocytes that are responsible for the production of melanin or skin pigment. The skin color you have is determined by the total amount of melanin secreted.  The following are the types of skin discoloration:

  • When there is a loss of melanin, it results to hypopigmentation. The one who suffers from hypopigmentation has lighter skin than the natural color of the skin. Some of the examples of hypopigmentation are Tinea Versicolor and Vitiligo.
  • When the skin develops dark patches, the kind of skin discoloration is called hyperpigmentation. As the name suggests, here there is excessive production of skin pigment, melanin. Overproduction of melanin occurs due to overactive melanocytes. If you are regularly exposed to the harsh rays of the sun, it can result in hyperpigmentation.
  • Your skin may become pale when the amount of oxyhemoglobin reduces. As per the symptoms of skin paleness, the kind of discoloration may be categorized further. There may be white patches on the skin.

Skin Reddening
